Pat Toomey for anything in 2010 has the best ring of all to me.
Meehan will get the party nod. If Specter kicks, they are going to promote Gerlach.
Ryan Shafik is an astute political analyst and I would think Tom Knox could well be Democrats Gubernatorial choice. On R side, I think a closer look at Republican registration which is losing in southeast counties which disadvantages Jim Gerlach or Pat Meehan. I think Jim Gerlach is suited to his district ( obviously, not a conservative ) and I think he likes his job which he is very good at. I don’t see him as running for Governor.
Pat Meehan is product of DelCo organization, need I say more. Okay, Jubelirer.
Toomey could be a disaster. Yes, he could very well win the nomination. But does anyone think he can win a general? This isn’t about nominating the guy who has the best fit to a static party ideology or mythology, its about winning the election and getting the best candidate possible who can actually do that. Think Bob Dole in 1996.
Meehan teamed with Turzai would be a very good statewide ticket in 2010.
Speculation is fine, but the idea that Toomey would be a disaster is unsupported and specious, at best. Of those mentioned, none but Toomey are conservatives.
The Asher team:
Meehan and Turzai. It’s already being talked about in Harrisburg.
The team to be defeated Meehan and Turzai.
I think any talk of Meehan, Turzai and Knox is just plain premature. Fact is none of these guys has statewide name recognition and none is doing anything to generate that recognition.
Toomey, on the other hand, is almost a household name.
Toomey has shown he can overcome very hostile demographics, as he did three times in the Lehigh Valley even though he was expected to lose. Gore and Rendell cleaned up in the 15th Congressional District, while Toomey was kicking his Dem opponent’s butt by double digits. Toomey is very much like Reagan … though bearing a message of traditional American principles and values (some would call this “conservative”) he wins over hearts and minds with a plainspoken and sincere manner that connects with people. He grew up in a middle class, union home and put himself through Harvard. Classic story to tell. He rides on no one’s coattails or fame. People like that. Like Palin, he is most famous for taking on the good old boys and nearly beating them against all odds (primary vs Specter). He stood up to his own party against the disastrous Medicare Part D scheme. He fought pork, a la McCain-Palin.
