“According to the proposal, gun owners who violate the law would be fined up to $500 for the first offense and up to $1,000 or 90 days in jail for subsequent offenses.”
Let’s see . . .
A criminal gets caught with a gun that is stolen. The police find that no report was made on the theft. Does the criminal who stole the gun (or who bought it from the guy who did) then become the star witness against the legal gun owner who was the victim of the crime?
Do these dunderheads have any examples in the real world where this type of legislation has actually worked to reduce crime?
The only scrutiny they should invite would be from the US and PA Constitutions. The public doesn’t just get to approve/reject laws willy-nilly. Passing constitutional muster is the primary requirement.
PS — While the true victim of crime should never be punished by government for being the victim, those who truly do engage in straw purchases to enable criminals to get guns should be punished severely and not just given a fine or some jail time. They should be charged as an accessory to the crime and do serious prison time. If the gun they provide is used in a robbery, they should spend years in prison. If it is used to murder someone, they should get life in prison.
The harsher penalties might stop people from doing straw purchases but even if it does not, it will punish those who are actively part of the problem.
Leave the crime victim alone.
