Legal fees exceeding $1 million through December 31, 2008 reported as being paid with Senate funds to high-priced Philadelphia law firms is a disgrace and a monumental waste of taxpayers' money. To state that payments of these amounts is "consistent with Senate policy" makes a mockery of common sense and should be insulting to the Senators receiving this "memo" from Pileggi.
It sure as heck should not be necessary to hire lawyers if no one has done anything wrong. If certain Senators have done something wrong, then taxpayers should not have to pay their legal expenses. This applies double to Senators and staff that are no longer in the Senate, such as Jubelirer, Brightbill and Mike Long.
Also, why would it be necessary to hire legal counsel to "….conduct "an exhaustive internal investigation and to ensure that all potentially relevant records, both paper and electronic, are retained until completion of the investigation"?
SS
Those who would know are sayinghat much of this is for Jubelirer, Brightbill and Mike Long.
So when are we going to see additional indictments in the Bonusgate mess? The election is over. The holidays are over. Isn't it past time for Corbett to deliver the goods?
"…to conduct an exhaustive internal investigation and to ensure that all potentially relevant records, both paper and electronic, are
retained until completion of the investigationdestroyed to protect the guilty…."There. I fixed it.
It would be interesting to know which lawyers and law firms were retained and how much each was paid? and when? These legal fees are starting to be competitive with what the Democrats have paid.
And what public relations and ancillary services are covered in this? $4.4 million ….follow the money. Would this information be available under the new open records law?
So…let me try to understand this.
If you act unethically and/or illegally, it could cost taxpayers $1M.
If you act ethically and legally, it costs taxpayers $0.
Why are we re-electing these clowns?
Rich,
I will ask another question, but also give you the answer:
Q: Which is the biggest problem we face in dealing with all of this political corruption, ignorance or apathy?
A: I don't know and I don't care.
Hope! Change! Future!
Wheeeeeeeeeeeeee!
We can't seem to find anyone other than masochists to run against the machine. They will stop at nothing to destroy those who pose a serious threat.
You pretty much have to be a masochist. The incumbent will do all he/she can to stop you from taking their "power" from them.
I've seen politicians who have reputations as being reasonable adults turn into viscous attack machines when someone dared go after "their" seats. And these were Republicans…
Once you factor in the money, challengers are screwed.
Seriously, what would it take to run for a statewide seat?
- You get slandered daily by your county party officials and the incumbent
- Your kids and spouse get harassed and they are told how awful you are
- Your workplace gets slandered
- You spend loads of money, loads of time
- You have to beg thousands of people for money, then they expect favors for life
- You hear how everyone wants honest politicians…until you start speaking the truth
Fun, fun, fun. Sounds a bit like masochism to me…
