Bobby Casey plays dodgeball with his Bill Clintonesque answer.
Why is Casey Jr. voting to fund abortions and why is he voting pro-abortion one out of three times?
Casey Sr. would have been a lot more pro-life in his voting in the Senate along with these kind of comments.
The real key to fewer abortions is to recognize it as murder and make it illegal.
It is murder. My mother was an ER nurse at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, pre Roe. Suffice it to say that desperate women will do unspeakable things to themselves when abortion is illegal. To end abortion, we really need to change hearts and minds through persuasion and we need to provide PRIVATE CHARITABLE SUPPORT and adoption counseling.
A dear friend recently observed: "The pro-life community doesn't do enough to promote adoption." And he is absolutely right. Casey is also correct that we need to provide additional support to desperate women. I disagree that the support should be provided by government. Private charity should always be the provider of charitable support.
I think he has this partially correct. While I do not doubt that aid for pregnant women makes a tremendous difference and is an essential way to promote life, by suggesting that the federal government is the best source of this aid is a terrible proposition. State and local governments–as dictated by the Tenth Amendment–are the only reasonable source of funds that ought to be distributed to pregnant women (or to education, energy, trade/commerce, etc).
Interestingly, Casey suggests that his concern with reversing Roe is that each state would be permitted to set its own abortion policies. Isn't this what we ought to be striving for? Why would we not want Roe reversed so that federalism can be allowed to flourish?
