    No sports after high school!

    No government sponsored sports period.

    Ridiculous.

    It's a game. A government subsidized game.

    Ridiculous.

It's a game. A government subsidized game for millionaires..

Exactly what is "ridiculous" about Mario Lemeiux being knighted in Canada?

  7. Posted June 17, 2009 at 4:16 pm | Permalink

    It's Canada…That's ridiculous enough.

  8. Posted June 17, 2009 at 4:22 pm | Permalink

    I'll concede that

I agree… Mario deserves the accolades. The "anti-everything" crowd needs to get a grip on reality. The guy has achieved a great deal of success and should be congratulated.

    You have to ask?

Beknighting someone for a game (or acting) cheapens knighthood.

  11. Posted June 17, 2009 at 5:10 pm | Permalink

First of all…it's Canada, I'm not sure if you can "cheapen" that knighthood anymore

Secondly, it's a ceremonial honor. He's not going to be saddling up and leading the cavalry into battle.

Thirdly – We don't have the title of "Knight" in the United States, so your position of disgust is unfounded given the fact that the country in which you reside and are a citizen of doesn't even have such an honor to bestow upon its people.

  12. Posted June 17, 2009 at 5:32 pm | Permalink

I'm a little puzzled. How can Mario be knighted? Is he not a US citizen? If not, why not? He's made his fame and fortune in this country and then runs home to Canada to get knighted?

Sorry, folks, that dog ain't gonna hunt…

  13. Posted June 17, 2009 at 7:05 pm | Permalink

The only title Mario is worthy of here is 'damsel in distress'. In fact we should all be knighted for coming to his rescue and bailing out the Penguins.

  14. Posted June 17, 2009 at 8:12 pm | Permalink

Absolutely right! If he had said: "I do not wish to take money from people who don't like hockey. It would be wrong to confiscate money from them to build a stadium so that I can become even more obscenely rich than I already am.", he would have been worthy of some distinction. As it is, how does he differ from any in the horde of sports-related pickpockets?

sxhoolmarm, thank you for reminding us of the terrible costs visited upon us all because people do not follow the "no sports after high school" policy.

  16. Posted June 17, 2009 at 8:36 pm | Permalink

Terrible costs? What exactly might those be? Seriously, what blight on society has been caused by sports after high school? Please educate me, I'm dieing to know what has cause you to be so anti-sports, other than the obvious un-athletic loser picture of you that always pops into my head when you spout this BS.
As I have said in the past the amount of money that the government gets out of professional sports far exceeds the amount it puts into it, i.e. sales, income, amusment, property taxes.
And before you cite the mini-riots in Los Angeles over the weekend, yes Bill, there are stupid people our there, stupid people who do stupid things, they are in every society, they would be here with or without sports. So please enlighten me, or just shut the #$%& up!

  17. Posted June 17, 2009 at 9:42 pm | Permalink

RPT, sports after high school just waste a lot of time and money. I am, as you say, "obvious(ly) unathletic", and when I consider what I might have been able to do with my life if I hadn't wasted so much time, I think that "loser" is actually more complimentary than how I often think of myself, which is usually in terms of the mortal sins that fall under the "slothful" label.

That being said, it is still not right for billionaires to buy enough legislators to pass laws to threaten me with property confiscation if I do not "contribute" to what I may regard as even more mindless inanity than I am both prone, and able, to waste time on all by myself.

  18. Posted June 17, 2009 at 9:48 pm | Permalink

If you disagree with Bill, fine. Just state your reason and discuss it like adults. When you call names and say things like "So please enlighten me, or just shut the #$%& up!" you totally degrade any solid ground for your argument. Besides, Bill is allowed to state his opinion, just as anyone else.

Personally, I love professional sports – I enjoy the games and it provides some downtime and an escape from the difficulties of life. I understand Bill's contempt, though – for it is based on the continual fleecing of the taxpayers by greedy owners who say, "build us a stadium or we're leaving."

  19. Posted June 17, 2009 at 9:50 pm | Permalink

We do have a similar honor – we have bureaucrats just like those in Canada who love to have ceremonies to hand out keys to the city and big, cardboard checks!

    Take that, Canada!

  20. Posted June 17, 2009 at 10:58 pm | Permalink

1] If it cannot be cheapened any further, then what is the honor in it?

2] Knighthood was a position of honor. Where is the honor in usurping tax dollars to benefit yourself?

    3] Huh?

It's good that we do not have such titles here or our politicians would have usurped those too along with our tax dollars. Apparently you like bread and circuses to keep the masses entertained and distracted. I am not so inclined.

  21. Posted June 17, 2009 at 11:14 pm | Permalink

It is time for some city to get some spine and call their bluff.

"the continual fleecing of the taxpayers by greedy owners who say, "build us a stadium or we're leaving.""

We keep hearing about how much the stadiums cost the tax payers……but has there been any research into what they bring into the state/local coffers after the fact? Penguins have sold out 180 straight games?? God knows how many straight games the Steelers have sold out…..you don't think those people come to town, rent cars, stay in hotel rooms, eat at fancy resteraunts and just all around spend money to boost up sales of local merchants never mind the state and local taxes being collected.

Even though I grew up in Western PA (and went to High School w/ Bill's kids if it is the same Bill Adams), I come back more often for sporting events (5 Steeler games and 4 Pens games in the last year) than anything else. Just think of all of my hard earned Virginia wages being spent in Western PA because of sports after High School.

  23. Posted June 18, 2009 at 4:41 pm | Permalink

I did my own research by looking in my wallet. For all the supposed benefits, my property taxes only keep going up. I'm guessing local taxes in Pittsburgh haven't dropped. Now on top of it all the gov wants to raise my income tax. I would also assume that all these 'boosts' never result in putting money back into the kittys they stole it from. So no, I have not benefitted at all.
I'll agree, the teams do consistently sell out alot of games which makes it even more fascinating that they juuuuuust can't seem to make enough money to sustain themselves.

  24. Posted June 18, 2009 at 5:57 pm | Permalink

Look up The Allegheny Institute for Public Policy. They are a Pittsburgh area think tank and they have done the studies on sports teams. They ARE NOT economic generators. The money spent is discretionary and if not spent at a sports event, it would have been spent on another activity.

Nutsy is right. If they are such profitable enterprises, why do they need to run to government to confiscate money from people who don't want to go to the games or cannot afford to if they did?

There are not enough people like you to offset the money that taxpayers put into the sports playpens. And likely, if the City and the State were not as oppressive (tax wise), many people would not have fled to better environs making the trip back to the 'burgh necessary.
