Santorum won PA by being a genuine conservative in both social and fiscal matters. Toomey can do the same, especially with the current backlash developing against the dems nationally. And Toomey can keep the seat by not selling out like Santorum to big government.

As long as Toomey stops trying to be all things to all people (ala Sotomotor), I think he will skunk the Democrat in 2010.

Of course, nothing can be taken for granted, and the grassroots will need to come out in force to ensure the win.

On a seperate but related note, can someone please tell Peg to drop the Senate bid and jump to Governor? We need a real choice there, and at the least, she can force the debate to the conservative spectrum.

    Arlen's days are numbered.

Morbius… I am starting to think this race will be more of an anti-Specter/anti-Obama race. Toomey is the 2006 Bobby Casey: Lucky enough to run against someone whose univerally despised.

  6. Posted August 13, 2009 at 2:15 pm | Permalink

Well, you could pretend that you have a little confidence in Toomey…

  7. Posted August 13, 2009 at 2:16 pm | Permalink

Fast Eddies numbers are down to 50%?

Y'know, this is just not playing out the way the Democrats expected. Obama was supposed to be the uniter, not a divider, and he was going to usher in a new Democrat Party Reich that would last for a 1000 years.

    What happened?

  8. Posted August 13, 2009 at 2:20 pm | Permalink

I am confident in Toomey, but I also see Specter polling Santorum-like numbers. Part of defeating an incumbent is having a hated incumbent.

  9. Posted August 13, 2009 at 2:21 pm | Permalink

The country is still a center-right country. Obama/Pelosi have turned left so hard that they are rolling over their hybrid SUV.

  10. Posted August 13, 2009 at 2:21 pm | Permalink

Actually Toomey is running a brilliant campaign so far and I hope he keeps it up, with running unopposed he can run right down the middle and truly appeal to the the moderate and independents that will be truned off by Specter/Sestak as they race as far to the left as possible, I can't wait to be rid of arlen once and for all.

I can't believe his numbers are as "high" as 50%.

Look closer at the numbers: Eddie job approval: 39% Disapproval: 50%

    I would have to pretend.

    Specter voted to confirm Sotomayor.

Sestak would vote to confirm her.

Toomey would have voted to confirm her too.

Their differences begin to pale when you think about the consequences of such a vote. He can vote for any good bill and she will rule it unconstitutional.

Good ole Fast Eddie is just doing to the state what he did to the City of Philadelphia…..America's mayor, indeed!! He did nothing for the neighborhoods, why should he, we only pay the taxes and was heavily involved in the race baiting when John Street ran for re-election. I guess he just believed his hype, and now we are the joke. So the press will build Sestak up like the second coming, this should be very interesting…..I saw him on Fox News this morning discussing his Philadelphia Town Hall (why Philly, hmmmm?)…I have not been impressed since he tried to tell me that cutting the Stimulus down from 10,000 earmarks to only 8,000 earmarks was in fact a cut….they do truly think we are stupid.

I don't believe that for one second if Toomey were in the senate he would have voted for Soto. He is playing politics, he has no oponent for the primary so he is running down the middle of the road, why alienate moderates and independents who are already going to be pissed at Specter/Sestak.
He is playing smart, he is not going to take on anything to controversial that will alienate the electorate, let the spectre/sestak show playout so they bloody the hell out of each other while running as flat out socialists, that is what will alienate people, not Toomey taking a page out of the Casey play book and saying, "hey, atleast I'm not that guy!"

“Healthcare Reform” is something that neither Sestak nor Specter can afford to support.

They are toast if they go with Obama.

  17. Posted August 13, 2009 at 4:20 pm | Permalink

Again he is running the Republican version of Casey 2006. Let your opponent's negatives open the door for you. This election is about Obama/Arlen.

  18. Posted August 13, 2009 at 4:39 pm | Permalink

So you are suggesting that we can't believe what Toomey has to say, that it's just politics?

That's even worse and makes him no better than any other 2 bit political whore.

(If RPT is accurate in his assessment. ) Strap them on Pat. Quit equivocating stand for something, firmly and proudly. If you are wishy washy and lukewarm, you will lose and deserve to lose. If we cannot take you at your word now, why should we trust you after you are elected.

Santorum lost the pro life Democrat voters when he endorsed pro abortion Specter. He defined himself at that moment as a party over principle politician who is just playing a game and is not to be trusted at face value. It seems that you are using the same play book and that book is a loser.

  19. Posted August 13, 2009 at 4:45 pm | Permalink

Going down the middle of the road is a good way to get run over. He cannot be all things to all people and win. He will lose those who have strong principles and who will do the work of getting out the vote. He won't gain enough of the so called moderate vote to offset what he loses in credibility or in time and money from the base.

In the off chance that he would win (because the opposition is just so bad) what standards and promises do we hold him to? Can we be angry or disappointed when he follows through on pandering for votes promises?

Take a stand or take a seat on the sidelines Pat.

  20. Posted August 13, 2009 at 5:36 pm | Permalink

What standards and promises do we have to hold Casey to? He didn't say anything of substance in 2006 except, "look at me, I'm not Rick Santorum"!
I think you are give way to much credit to the masses, Toomey is running a great campaign so far, when the time comes from him to have ideas and take a stand he will, but that time is not now, now he just builds his positives while limiting his negatives, that is how you win an election, and it is something that the party has really forgotten how to do.

  21. Posted August 13, 2009 at 6:21 pm | Permalink

We are stupid. Look at the people we have in office.

  22. Posted August 13, 2009 at 6:21 pm | Permalink

I'm rewording to "hits" instead of "dips".

Too confusing. Bad choice of words on my part.

  23. Posted August 13, 2009 at 7:19 pm | Permalink

Casey was not 'our' candidate. He's a democrat and we didn't elect him so there are no standards or really even any expectations of standards to hold him to.

Can you name any of these pandering, middle of the road, no commitment, wishy-washy moderate who used this strategy and won?

Ray, I would love for Sotosuperior and the 4 conservative members to form a coalition and rule all congressional acts unconstitutional in violation of the commerce clause and or the 10th amendment. on a more serious note, warning to Toomey, don't begin morphing into a santorum. nothing is guaranteed and we dont have to support you. be a conservative, not a politician. do not take us for granted. you are supposed to represent us not expect us to support and follow. pat it is better to keep your yap shut on things like sotosuperior then having to opine on everything in a way that appeals to a broader base. in the end be honest. if a majority doesnt want an honest conservative then so be it. we then have to get back to winning the debates and discussions and hearts and minds rather than just win elections with big gov repubs. i see for the first time in my life that a larger group is finally getting it. 2010 on the national level stands to be what 2006 was on the state level. a lot of entrenched dems will be in shock if things continue the same way for another year.
