Orie Melvin only raised $725,000? Didn't Scarnati promise to raise $1.2 million? Right, he did – see below. And state committee bought it. This race would not have been close if Shogan was the candidate. Please please no more Orie's after this election and everyone now knows what Scarnati's "pledge" is worth. And Gleason thought Jane was a viable statewide candidate? Hasn't proven to be a very effective fundraiser for her sister.

Internal discussion developed with comments reported that during the Friday evening dinner and reception for judicial candidates, there was some concern among the judicial candidates when former GOP Sen. Scarnati announced that he would raise $1.2 million for Supreme Court candidate Joan Orie-Melvin (sister of Sen. Jane Orie). http://mercergopforum.blogspot.com/2009/02/part-1...

And conservatives, read the whole article. Orie Melvin didn't start coming out against Panella's trial lawyers and labor contributions until it became clear they were giving more to Panella. The article states her biggest contributors were trial lawyers and labor. She had no problem taking their money. So at the very least, $175,000 of the $725,000 she raised came from trial lawyers and labor (and this includes only two entities. I'm sure many more trial lawyer and labor groups contributed to the $725,000). How much did Scarnati actually raise for her? Or will he attribute money raised from trial lawyers and labor to his "pledge"?

"Melvin, who in a recent debate criticized Panella's reliance on special interest money, received $25,000 from the Philadelphia Trial Lawyers Association in addition to the $100,000 it previously gave her. Melvin also reported receiving $50,000 from the Virginia-based Mid-Atlantic Laborers Political League."

Orie Melvin is politics as usual and that makes the idea of voting for her very difficult.

For example, the Pennsylvania State Education Association lists Panella and Melvin as endorsed. In my left-wing union’s mind, they are both the same.

Melvin is Pro-Life Federation endorsed and we are getting an emotional tug to vote for her.

I have a conscience that allowed me not to vote for Tom Ridge twice and not hurt the GOP since he won without my vote.

Not voting for Orie Melvin will probably mean she loses in this situation but I think the GOP has to be brought into line here in PA just like is happening in the New York congressional district right now.

    Its means a hardball approach.

It means maybe allowing Dems to win in some situations but the corrupt monster of politics as usual must be subdued in this state starting with the Republican Party.

I may write in Jackie Shogan.

For the record, the folks at PSEA have recommended both Panella and Melvin for Supreme Court.

For Superior Court they recommend Dems Robert Colville, Kevin McCarthy, Anne Lazarus and Teresa Sarmima. PSEA recommends Republicans Judy Olson and Sallie Mundy for Superior Court.

For Commonwealth Court PSEA recommends Democrats Barbara Ernsberger and Linda Judson. PSEA also recommends Republican Kevin Brobson for Commonwealth Court.

PSEA also recommends Kate Ford Eliott to the Supreme Court and Dan Pellegrini to Commonwealth Court. They are up for retention votes YES or NO.

The strongest message we could send in the Tuesday elections is to vote NO in the two retention races. Otherwise, this is no time to send messages by turning the state supreme court over to the Demicrats for the next decade or more.

That would be the worst message. Judge Ford Elliot and Judge Pellegrini are two of the best appellate judges in Pennsylvania. There is absolutely no reason to oppose either of them. There are many others whom I would oppose, but not those two.
