Not really what Corbett said. He said we need to get rid of the wasteful spending, and should not be looking to raise taxes.
For what it's worth, if Corbett doesn't rule out a tax increase, I won't rule out voting for someone else.
Agreed. If he's thinking (even remotely) about raising taxes, why not vote for the Democrat just to get it over with?
Egads. Someone save us from the moderates and liberals!
Sam looks like a better candidate every day. He should be cutting commercials with this quote…right now.
Corbett is not going to raise taxes, he wants to reduce spending and cut waste. The quote was taken out of context
UM…this comes from a Tweet? Until I see the full transcript of what he said in it's entirety, I am not believing this. Think George Bush Sr.. No Republican who is serious about running for office and winning would say they would raise taxes.
Agreed.
Was it Corbett who refused to sign a 'no tax increase' pledge recently? Not accusing, just asking. It was some prominent republican and I think it was Corbett.
When politicians believe that government is the answer, the taxpayer is the source of the money to pay for it. Whether it is an increase in taxes, a new tax, or the new preferred method of printing additional money, the people pay.
I have seen nothing from Corbett to indicate that he doesn't believe that government knows best. Sam is looking better all the time.
The only guy who has specifically listed savings in government in program after program is the Auditor General, Jack Wagner. The other guys just chatter and parse words and make noises about it. The only guy who specifically advocated for a host of tax increases is Joe Hoeffel. They are actually the only two who have laid out specifics.
Ray,
Sam already has my vote. (Although I do wish he would make some NOISE on our side of the state.) Corbett is from my neck of the woods and I wouldn't vote for him if he was the only candidate. I just think it would be stupid of him to say what this Tweet claims.
Corbett did indeed say it. Capitolwire and others are running the story. He said it would be a "last resort", which coming from a politician means kiss your money goodbye. He said that "nothing can be ruled in or out" in regards to a tax increase. Rohrer seems to be the better choice to me now. I'll bet Gerlach now wishes he had stayed in. He would not have said such a thing.
This is sad, as I was planning on voting for Gerlach at first, then thinking about Corbett because I assumed he was conservative. I don't know much about Sam Rorher, but I may check him out. It just seems to me like when people leave that door cracked open just a little bit, they end up following through on it.
Assumed he was conservative? I'm sure the Teachers' Union endorsed him because of his conservative credentials.
In am confused, Gerlach was by far the most liberal of the 3 GOP candidates. Why would someone called 'ConservativeGirl' girl vote for Gerlach? Do you oppose drilling in Alaska and support pork and stem cell research like him?
Lets give Corbett an A for honesty and defining himself as a RINO unworthy of support.
I will vote Rohrer in the primary, but will not vote Corbett this fall.
Case closed.
Corbett said in regards to a tax increase: "That's not something we would want to do…..That would be our last resort."
Translation……"I am willing to raise taxes…."
Corbett is a tax and spend liberal Republican.
The tax increase comments of Corbett were obtained by John Micek, reporter for the Allentown Morning Call newspaper.
Micek put them on his blog which is linked here.
Rich
I won't vote for Dems but I would say that when Republican politicians support spending like they did in Harrisburg for this year's budget and guys like Corbett can't rule out new taxes, there's not much difference between D's and R's.
I read a comment recently where someone said the Democrats are "Socialists" and the Republicans are "Slocialists."
Why not try and help Rohrer go all the way?
The expression I use is "drink the Kool Aid."
What I mean is this
Legit questions have been raised about Rohrer being a payjacker from 2005 and a Perzel man
Is this a grudge match against Corbett from those being investigated by him, using the conservative banner?
Maybe yes, maybe no.
Rohrer should say no new taxes for sure, but he should also say Tom Corbett is unacceptable and he will not endorse him for governor if he wins the GOP primary.
There ought to be an independent candidate ready to go if Rohrer loses, that's how serious I am.
If I see Rohrer taking all our passion and energy in the grassroots, then selling his soul to Corbett in a primary loss with an endorsement, I will say this was all a setup.
As it stands now, I'm not being swallowed with any panic or fear to vote GOP no matter what.
Most voters are so upset, they will pull the R lever this fall whether the candidate is a lib or a RINO. Corbett will win if he gets past the primary, but I have a conscience and will not vote for him.
It will be a very interesting election cycle to say the least. "A sleeping giant" has awoken, but how many people are willing to do the research on candidates? Like you, I feel anger and outrage from voters, but I also know that many are sheeple who just follow the pack. It seems people get riled up about one thing, but don't really get the whole picture and how it will be affecting them.
They get caught up in politico "pretty speech" and are not aware of the ramifications of actually putting what is said into actions.
Rorher has a couple challenges. One he has no money. Second his consultant is famous for thinking that politics is a game of who can hit the softest. Corbett will chew him up and spit him out.
Why would someone who has no money even venture into this?
You people do understand that there is a $6 Billion hole in 2011-2012, right? When we don;t have the stimulus money, and the pension bill falls due, we have a HUGE hole to fill. Cuts are great — until they close a park or a museum. The fact is, we may have to raise some taxes — like a severance tax on gas drilling. Oh, and by the way — every other major gas producing state has a severance tax. We are the exception. If you tax the gas extraction you can avoid having to raise PIT.
Corbett is no fool and he is no liar — because only a fool or a liar would say he isn't going to raise taxes knowing the problems we face. The fact is SOME tax is going up. I would trust someone willing to discuss WHICH more than someone claiming the impossible.
The elites are sucking money from the taxpayers. Right now, it is the Democratic elites who funded Rendell who are slopping up your tax dollars and we are running out. Corbett will raise taxes because the Republican elites want their turn at the trough. Oink! Oink!
*cough* CUT SPENDING! *cough*
This election is beginning to get fun, and more clear.
Corbett = higher taxes
Rohrer = no higher taxes
For all his possible faults on the payraise, I still think that Rohrer is an honest guy. If he says he won't raise taxes, I tend to believe him. I'll give Rohrer a chance.
Hardly. Any politician who tells you that all of our problems can be solved without the possibility of a single tax rate increasing is lying through his teeth, and anyone who believes him has no understanding of economics. Bush Sr. said "no new taxes" and was then crucified when he had to raise one.
The key to a good policy is cutting the taxes that discourage companies from locating here, to make the necessary (and likely unpopular) changes to streamline government services, and to invest in projects and incentives to bring new business to the region, and educate our citizens to become that workforce. Our next governor also has to deal with a massive pension statewide pension crisis and like it or not, that piper needs to be paid.
Due to the economy, revenues are down and demand on government services are up. Borrowing only exacerbates the problem, and PA is already deep in debt. All other options having been exhausted, what would you suggest the state do? Kudos to Corbett for being honest with the people.
Yahweh is spot on with this assessment. The pension issue is VERY real, and VERY dangerous, and people like Fast Eddie have simply put it off for the next guy to deal with. They even used the emergency funds to patch this year's budget hole, so let's hope we don't have some sort of natural disaster to deal with next year.
Rich – is there waste and inefficiency? Absolutely, but eliminating it takes significant time and effort, and even then it only covers a fraction of the shortfall.
If Rohrer thinks he can patch a $6B budget hole with a few spending cuts, then by 2012 he will be calling up Obama begging for a bailout.
OR, we could cut some of the many "entitlement" programs AND if lawmakers really wanted our votes, they could pledge to cut their spending via WAMS and per diem too. Seriously, these people must have homes with budgets…..when you have no money you must CUT SPENDING.
Paul Pace, don't forget the pension increase. Rohrer voted for that too. Two strikes and a foul tip.
Lawmakers need to cut their pay first by ten percent and eliminate any pensions but allow 401 K savings plans. The per diems need to take a hit and other perks. Legislators must pick up 20 percent of their medical benefit costs.
Cut the legislative staff. It looks like a lot of these clowns time is taken up for illegal political work anyway based on what we are now learning.
The legislators have several thousand staff. 600 of them gone would save over 30 million bucks when you include their bennies etc.
Cap public school salaries with superintendents outside the big cities limited to 100 thousand , only 15 percent more allowed in any bonuses or other compensation.
They make 110 to 160 thousand bucks now. There are 500 out there. Cut 20,000 from each= 10 million dollars saved.
The bulk of government spending is on the special pay and benefits for government employees that most taxpayers don't enjoy.
The anger of the people on our side.
The legislature must cut its pay and perks period.
All 253 making 8 thousand less saves 1.6 million bucks. Cut per diems, abolish pensions, make em pay 20 percent of their medical costs.
Cutting 600 ot the thousands of staffers is good for 30 million or more dollars.
This must extend to pay and perks for public schools. Salary caps for public schools with superintendents outside the big cities limited to 100 thousand per year, with only 15 percent more compensation allowed for bonuses etc.
There are 500 of these people and they make 110 to 160 thousand now, I sure we can save 30 thousand on each this system and thats 15 million dollars.
The special pay and bennies for government employees make up the bulk of government budgets. Cut them and spending is controlled.
The anger of the people is aroused. Now is the time to act.
Lets get real,.
People who pay taxes are taking hits in pay and benefits right now.,
They will fully support government employees including myself taking hits. Freeze my pay for a year or two at least and have me pay 20 percent of my medical benefits. I only pay 5 percent of the cost now. If hundreds of employees in my place of employment paid the 2 thousand or so bucks a year that involves taxpayers save over 500,000 thousand dollars.
Multiply that times hundreds of school districts, schools etc. across the state I see 250 million dollars of savings for taxpayers.
at least Corbett is being upfront with voters. Our state has a huge debt, we have a enormous looming Pension crisis(Which nobody seems to know about), and the fact that in 2011 the stimulus money will end putting the state in a real bad situation; it is ridiculous for Rohrer to say for certain that no matter what he will not raise or have any new taxes. I dont want a new or more taxes either, believe me, but lets be realistic and I am glad Corbett is doing something that most politicians are unable to do… be honest and upfront with voters… Corbett is a true conservative so I confident that he will cut wasteful spending and use any and all of the resources he has available to NOT raise taxes.
I will vote for Corbett in the Primary and in the General Election… I do know that there is no way I am voting for a Democrat especially Onorato who Rendell said "Will be our next Governor" I think I can speak on behalf of most Pennsylvanians when I say If Fast Eddy wants Onorato, WE DON'T!
OK, that's about $100 million. Great. And where do you propose to cut to get the remaining $5.9 billion?
"I won't raise taxes" = "I plan to ask Obama to solve our pension problem for us"
Sam Rohrer is the only conservative in the race.
Again, Pennsylvania has the highest corporate taxes in the country and gas companies will be paying those taxes plus local taxes. The landowners will also be paying state, local and school taxes on gas extraction. Somebody please tell me how much "windfall" taxes would the state, local and school districts be getting if there were no gas in PA? What a bunch of idiots. Cut the damn wasteful spending and quit looking for more "sources of revenue" for government to find ways of wasting.
I wish you'd run for governor. That way I could vote against you too.
There is so much waste, fraud, duplication of services, and manifest unnecessary government intervention that if we eliminated that, we'd never have to raise another tax or add a new one.
The legislative pension is the first place to start just so that we don't add to our pension crisis. Funny, it is government ordered pensions for government workers that are underfunded that caused this crisis, so your solution is to tax the taxpayer more.
Do you work for the state?
Agreed. I have not heard of anything here in Western PA for him.
We have that 'hole' because government keeps spending. There is rarely anything more than talk about cuts. That has to end.
The budget is bloated and wasteful. The method that you propose will bankrupt the people of the state and then we'll be in the same boat as California.
ANY increase is intolerable. Spending cuts — deep and aggressive — are what we need. Business taxes and regulations must be such that business and jobs will come to Pa.
What is your evidence that Corbett is any kind of conservative, let alone a 'true' conservative?
If he is so conservative, why is he linked only to machine RINOs?
Who are his conservative allies? What has he done that is conservative? Where are his plans to cut government? Eliminate waste and fraud?
ROHRER a Payjacker. One of the Harrisburg papers spelled it out almost immediately. Rohrer voted YES on the payraise becasue Perzel swore his school Property TAx Elimination Bill would never se the light of day if he did not. I called Schroder and he told me THAt was the deal.
Rohrer is in NO WAY a Perzel man. He takes no special interest money and would vote against a tax increae even if he was the only vote. Rohrer voted Perzel out of the Speakers slot and became a taarget of the REpublican machine as Well as Perzels Robo calls because of it.
If ther is any chance of saving this REpublican party ROHRER is the man to do it.
He definately has my vote. He will stay focused and not give in to pressure.
He has grass roots support made up of people. They make up an army. YOU also must remember SAM has been doing Tea Party meetings for 15 years and has 35 taxpayer groups accross the state behind him. His message is being heard.
Check out Corbetts so called grass roots on his site – ALL Committee people. I haven't heard anything specific coming from his mouth. He has the exact same game plan as Lynn Swann. Dont' give specifics, get the parties endorsment with your NAME , not issue postions. REfuse to debate you opponent untio AFTER you get the endorsement. Rohrer knows the issues and has plans for all of them. He would hand Corbet his head on a platter.
By the way DID CORBETT ever give back HIS PAY RAISE of $38,000. Wagner Did!. Rohrer DId! Corbett, our Attorney General has nothing in the papers about that?
Rohrer has held THAT pledge for 17 years. SAM takes nothing from special interests and owes them nothing. He does not walk in lockstep behind anyone,,,including his own party. THAT is why he will win this thing.
CORBETT who was the 8th highest recipient from casinos, and one of the highest from the Teachers union will just keep watering the garden of big money. He is the machine.
DID Corbett ever give back HIS $38,000 pay raise? Can't find anything in the internet..and THAT wouldhave been news!
You say "Corbett is not going to raise taxes"…you are saying something that he himself refuses to say. It is amazing that you know more about what Corbett is or is not going to do than he does. Are you Brian Nutt? That would explain it.
Thank you for your input.
I intend to vote for Rohrer in May 18th and I've watched the legislature in a superficial enough way over the years to know that Rohrer was a more conservative "voice."
I don't know all the backroom details that you do, but I am listening.
I really do want things to change and I hope Rohrer is that change, but I carry my doubts on my sleeve.
Any Republican can win this year for Governor in PA and if Rohrer wins the primary he can win the general election.
