For the record please, you can not be as stupid as Kerns and his bottom of the barrell budies Bill Shaw and Brian Miles are. Damion is not Jim Matthews nephew he is married to his niece and ran his own campaign that faired far better than Kerns, Castors candidate LEE did. So lets get it sraight loosing to Addcock has nothing to do with Matthews Dee is a great candidate.

The real story, of course, is that once again "The Matthews Effect" reared its head and struck down the Matthews/Asher candidate in the race. Asher engineered the infamous "deal" in late 2007 whereby Commissioner Jim Matthews gave the county election away to the Democrats to "teach Bruce Castor a lesson." Since then, of course, Joe Hoeffel has used his position of power to run for governor, bankrupt the county, hire every Democrat crony possible, bring unions to county government, attack the DA and Sheriff, and set the stage for a pay to play scandal that has even Luzerne County laughing at Montco. The county GOP response to what Asher did? Make sure every Matthews/Asher backed candidate for any party or public office is defeated. The list of victims so far is long and last night, Matthews' nephew Damien, was the latest victim. There could be more victims of The Matthews Effect, but I suspect Matthews himself will be one next year. For a guy who got elected because he ran on a platform that his opponent within the party was "a traitor," the term "hyporcite" seems too mild.

I agree that Damien is married to Matthews' neice. I agree he ran his own campaign with help from Asher's toads. I agree he can't help what a turd Matthews is. You are right about all that. The fact is that Damien was THOUGHT to be Matthews' candidate and that was all it took for him to lose. And Castor as pushing Adcock and asking people to be for Dee on the second ballot if they had to be for the hometown guy on the first. In truth, this came down to the candidate perceived to be the Matthews guy v. the party's guy. What "Lee" are you talking about? Falgoust? A Matthews ally from way back? What possible chance would he have at getting Kerns' and Castor's support. That statement is stupid. Here's what happened: There was Damien, fairly or unfairly painted as the Matthews candidate. He got 82 votes on the first ballot. The Non-Matthews candidates got a combined 200 votes. Then, all the gorundwork Castor, Miles and Kerns laid for second ballot votes for Adcock kicked in and 80% of the original non-Damien votes went to Adcock. This was a slaughter, planned and executed by Castor, Miles and Kerns. Politics 101…and you don't get it, do you?

It's pretty funny cause the Montco Gop has picked several losers in a row as candidates. I have seen all of these candidates speak publicly, and Adcock has no chance in hell of beating Schwartz. It will be a blood bath in November. The only 2 candidates that were new, fresh, and actually had a chance were Damien and Quinter. It's a shame that the MCRC was more concerned with continuing the same old BS politics that has lost them the last couple of elections than giving a guy like Damien or Quinter a shot.

The reality is that, sadly NO GOP candidate will be able to tackle Allyson Schwartz so long as the 13th is slicked and diced as it is now. That is a fact you can take to the bank.

Really isn't fair to blame the MontcoGOP for the two retards Ken Davis picked to run in 2006 and 2008.

There were six candidates for this seat and nobody was shoved down anybody's throat. The candidates were all free to go out and get their votes, there was no leadership directive on who to vote for. I think it's a refreshing change. Quinter and Dachowski and Haughton were all younger candidates and all offered their best shot. The winner was Adcock, fair and square.

It will be nice to have a candidate who runs a real campaign instead of gimmicks (Raj), disappearing acts (Kats) and whining negativity (Malicious Brown).

Jim. You are right that Damien and Quinter might have had a chance. Both, however, were pegged as tools. Damien a toolof Jim Matthews the traitor and Quinter of Bob Asher the Felon. Given that MAtthews and asher are just about themost distrusted men in politics, people are fearful to support their candidates in Montgomery County. Not fair and unreasonable, but that's the fact. What Asher and Matthews have done to the party at the county level is so bad (and the worst is yet to be disclosed), that any association with eitherof them has become toxic.

Well, this is not exactly right. Bruce Castor made the calls that swung the vote for Adcock at the tacit direction of Chairman Bob Kerns. I don't know it that was the right move, but Bruce gets his way at the moment with the committee. How do I know? I was one of those he spoke to and a number of key leaders who control blocks of votes told me they received a similar calland were acceding to Bruce's wishes. We failed to heed him in '07 and got Jim Matthews. It willbe along timebefore the committee fails to listen to him again.

I had heard this too and I saw Bruce talking with Kerns and Brian Miles between ballots and then going and speaking to various municipal leaders and the guy from Philly. My assessment is that Quinter, the guy in the race being run by the Asher operative (forget his name Adam Something), those votes went to Damien and all the rest to Adcock. Add Damien's vote total from round one and Quinter's, and you have about the total Damien got on the second ballot. This was a classic Asher-antiAsher vote, but this time Asher had two candidates in the race pledged to each other. But he lost again. The whisper that Damien is somehow related to Jim Matthews just killed him. All the Abington people spread that because Matthews replaced their guy Griff on the Health Board with Damien fueling the rumor that Damien was Matthews candidate. Quinter really hurt himself not endorsing Adcock and hiring Asher's people. Cut his own throat in the county. If he ever wants to go any where, he needs to realign himself. Josh: Bob Kerns and Bruce Castor control county politics, not Asher. Damien can't pick his relatives, Josh, but you can pick your friends.

If Adcock just talks about taxes being too high , he will lose in a landslide . Attack Schwartz on her pro-illegal immigrant amnesty , pro-affirmative action , and militantly pro-abortion positions , and the sleeping Republican base may wake up . And even in Montgomery County and Northeast Philadelphia there is a Republican base

As someone who has seen all the candidates and spoken with them, the assumptions made by some participating in this discussion are disheartening. This is truly Montco GOP politics at its worst. Among the worst assumptions is that Josh Quinter is an Asher guy. I know him and have discussed county politics with him at length. He absolutely IS NOT an Asher guy. Truth be told, he is beholden to no one. Based on my conversations with him, he has tried to stay focused on winning his race and stayed out of the internal disputes in the county entirely. His politics are actually much more aligned with the Castor/Kerns group. The idea that he hired Asher people is absolute nonsense. He is using consultants out of Washington that routinely help Conservative Republicans like Congressman McCarthy and Congressman Joe Wilson.

(Continued) Look at the facts and ask yourself: Could a guy that got the same early endorsement from Associated Builders & Contractors that Pat Toomey got be an Asher guy? Would the Eagle Forum, which has also already endorsed him, have gotten in line behind a squishy Asher guy? Would a guy who was in with Asher show up at MCRC events and Castor fundraisers (by the way, I hear he went to no Asher fundraisers, ask the folks that were there) if he were in with Asher? It makes no sense. This guy is a straight shooter. Maybe people should just ask him instead of making assumptions.

I have seen all the candidates speak and engage with voters. It is not even close. If you don't believe me, ask anyone at the Tea Party event in Philly last night. Even county party leaders on both sides of the split have candidly admitted it is not even close. I would hate to lose a real chance to beat Allyson Schwartz this fall because of petty politics. The mood will never be better than it is right now. I hope Quinter stays in the race and the "powers that be" check their facts. If not, I am afraid we are just sending another candidate to be slaughtered.

Lower taxes, less government, and less spending are always winning points.

  19. Posted February 10, 2010 at 4:21 pm | Permalink

    1) There doesn't seem to be any evidence whatsoever that Quinter had his hand in Asher's candy jar. I certainly don't want to speak for him, but wasn't Bob G. (a strident Asher critic) very supportive of Quinter? Those making this anonmymous claim need to come up with a little more proof on that.

    2) I personally preferred Quinter (though that was soft given that I just moved to his area, and admittedly wasn't all that educated on this race), and am always disappointed when I don't get a say in the matter via a primary. However, it would be a tragic shame if petty politics worked against winning this seat. There has never been and never will be again, a better opportunity to redeploy Allyson Schwartz.

You must be kidding, Schwartz is a prime time candidate. Why don't the Montco GOP send in a real player to challenge Allyson. No they send someone, who probably has never done anything political except write checks to the GOP. What about superstar Castor, Oh I guess that would not be a guaranteed win, I might have to work to win that seat. Get ready for another Allyson victory.
