Are you kidding? Isn't this what Rohrer suggested to reduce propert taxes (then it was a bad idea) and now they want to do it to increase the size of government (and it's a good idea).

I am not against broadening the scope of the sales tax if the rate is cut because the current rate picks economic winners and losers.

That said, the budget is too large. We are cutting transportation and law enforcement, but increasing do nothing social programs?

    Tax, baby, tax!

I have an idea. I know, it's radical…but why not cut taxes AND spending?

    I know…I'm crazy.

Congratulations to state government. The excellent work you have done for the citizens merits a 4% increase in your revenue.

Are you kidding me? Collect 4% more. What a joke. Anybody out there get a 4% raise lately? My company is not likely to increase wages this year, did not increase wages last year and even handed out a benefits cut and across the board wage reduction for all employees.

Is K-Y still tax exempt? That's the only defense left to make these tax increases any more bearable.

Earth to Fast Eddie and friends: Come back and talk to us when you CUT waste and entitlements programs from your "budget." Then, we will talk.

And so the last Rendell budget follows the pattern of the first seven–more taxes, more spending and nothing new from the unapologetic socialist.

What the H311 is Scarface doing applauding Rendell???

  10. Posted February 9, 2010 at 9:35 pm | Permalink

So if you are Scarnati and Rendell says something like 'Let's make an effort to get the budget done early this year' or 'Let's have a round of applause for all the Pennsylvanians that assisted in the Haitian rescue' you would not applaud?

  11. Posted February 9, 2010 at 9:52 pm | Permalink

Dude, that presumes Scarnati actually comprehends such things.

Yeah, pretty much. Same old, same old. More money for social stuff, criminals and of course, education.

Ed's legacy will be "no dollar left behind".

Taxes and spending are the true Ed Rendell legacy.

We’ll how Joe Scarnati and the GOP State Senate co-conspire with him to do this in the election year waters?

So how would a 4% tax impact the Vanguard Group – would they move to Delaware? How many more legislative disasters will we tolerate. Wait till you see the property tax increase 40% per year for the next 3 years at least to pay for the pension increase for public school employees. We now pay 2% more on utility bills so they can afford to bid for naming rights to a soccer stadium paid for by bridge tolls for bridges we can't afford to maintain. When our current teachers retire at $70,000. pension and our administrators at $90,000. per year it will be too late to change anything.

The Senate GOP says that Rendell's sales tax expansion (good enough to grow government but NOT cut property taxes???) is DOA.

QUERY: With Scarnati in charge, how long with that tough talk last? I give odds on three weeks.

  19. Posted February 10, 2010 at 1:42 pm | Permalink

I have no problem with lowering the sales tax and broadening the base, as sales taxes are more fair than income and property taxes. One is not penalized for working and earning more money. The main focus should be on reducing the size of government and lowering the income tax. But with a democrat in the governor's mansion I don't see that happening.

  20. Posted February 10, 2010 at 1:51 pm | Permalink

Again, if it were fo a dedicated purpose such as property tax elimination, I would agree.

But to simply put more money into the coffers to Ed Spendell can get that feeling up his leg is wrong.

    That's really hokey and dumb.

Is this what Johnson paid Charlie Gerow $74,000 of other peoples money to produce? That spending on an ineffective "consultant" is not a very good example of fiscal responsibility in action.

It never seems to surprise me to what extent these elected Government welfare cases will go to just to make sure their wallets will never go empty. This proposal is OK in Rendells' view to, expand the taxable items under the state sales tax program, and apply the proceeds to their overly greedy pension programs at the taxpayers expense. At the same time while the Governor is proposing this, they reject out of hand the school taxpayers cannot use this same sales tax scenario to eliminate school taxes for the home owner. The general public will not stand for expanding the sales tax for school property tax elimination h.b 1275 , but for their pensions they will. Who in the HE- – do they think they are BULL – - – - – - – . WARNING; the slaves are waking up and if these political Party masters don't stop going down this road . They will not like what they will be facing in future for these greedy, self enriching polices that they continue to pass. I guess they did not heed the last waring for their early moring pay rasie stunt. WAKE UP SLAVES the masters are looking take atvantage of the slaves again. When are the SLAVES going to stand up against these selfesish , greedy politicians?

You have to realize that all democrats determine how much they want to spend, and then figure out a way to pay for it. It should be the other way around. Figure out how much you want to tax, and then spend that money on the proper things.

I don't think property taxes are going away any time soon, but you could cut them in half by having more regional school districts with less state and federal mandates and more state funding as a percentage of their budgets.

If I were ever elected governor, I would apply the sales tax at 3% to everything except for food, clothing, and medicine and eliminate all other taxes except for the gas tax. Then you combine state agencies and close down the ones that are useless.

Dear Representatives, I am writing this letter to inform you of my distain for Governor Rendell’s proposal of changing the sales tax system in this state. The sales tax system should be changed in this state but not for Governor Rendell’s reason of saving the Government pension plans . Who ever came up with this idea of guaranteeing public pension plans should be put on trial for treason? Nowhere else in this country, pension plans are guaranteed, Just ask the Enron employees about their pension plans. I do believe Our Founding Fathers would have not ever fostered such a scam on their fellow taxpaying citizens. I believe the present day elected officials should do the right thing here and settle for less at retirement time than look for ways to make the taxpayer to make up for the losses. I also believe the only reason to change the sales tax system would be to offer the school property taxpayers of this state, the ”elimination” of the school taxes. When this same proposal was brought up to some of our elected officials in this state, the first thing they say in response is the public will not stand for the state sales tax to be change for school tax elimination. What changed so much?

I would have like to have witnessed our Founding Fathers response to this scam when informed by their elected officials that they were being commanded to pay for a pension plan let alone a guaranteed one for the likes of government” SERVICE” of their elected officials and government employees. What do you think would have happened back then after fighting a revolution to FREE us? I do believe you know what the response would have been. Just imagine when they get to unionize the military what that will be like. They are half way there with their privatization of the military. Wake Up ! Slaves Do you like the CHANGE?
