TOOMEY: SENATE RUN ‘BACK ON THE TABLE’

GrassrootsPA has learned that former Congressman Pat Toomey, the current Club for Growth President, just announced this morning on Bobby Gunther Walsh’s 1-On-1 Show, WAEB, 790AM, that a Primary challenge to Senator Arlen Specter is ‘now back on the table’…

UPDATED TEXT OF RON SHEGDA EMAIL RELAYING TOOMEY REMARKS ON SHOW:

Former Congressman Pat Toomey (R, PA-15), current Club for Growth President, just announced on Bobby Gunther Walsh’s 1-On-1 Show, WAEB, 790AM, that a Primary challenge to Senator Arlen Specter is “now back on the table.”

Mr. Toomey acknowledged that “Senator Specter cast the deciding vote on the very worrisome stimulus Bill, when he could have negotiated with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and President Obama for more productive tax cuts and less wasteful spending.” Pennsylvanians need to do some soul searching about who will really represent us in the Senate.

Pat Toomey would not be the 100th Person in the Senate. He would serve Pennsylvania through principled leadership and with acute thinking. As an entrepreneur, former investment banker, business owner, Congressman, co-founder of a local Lehigh Valley bank, and national policy leader, Mr. Toomey will give instant credibility and acumen to banking and finance issues on Capitol Hill. He is a fiscal and social Conservative.

While I'd rather have Pat run for governor, this is probably the best opportunity to take out Arlen, and he is the best person we have on the bench to do so. If Arlen votes for card-check, he is very vunerable, and Pat will have a better chance of winning than in 2004. If Arlen votes against card check, he will probably loose all union support, which did help him a little bit back in the 2004 primary.

Arlen won't be getting any help from the RNC or any other high ranking Republican this time around. In other words, Arlen is burnt toast.

Card check and Government Arbitrator imposed contracts are galvanizing even the usually less than principled, what's in it for me Chamber of Commerce and one Phila colleague called it the Union Thuggery Act. It will be good for union bosses. Will it be good for union members and for workers. Small businesses are particularly vulnerable.

Arlen, look within yourself and realize it is time to go. Embrace Pat Toomey as your successor and ride off into the sunset!

I wonder how much this is about him capitalizing on Specter's unpopularity or about his inability to make a dent in the field of governor's candidates?

Toomey! Toomey! Toomey! I'll max out to the guy (and I can barely afford to pay my mortgage, but with that, at least, I can count on a bailout from Uncle Sam. Just kidding.). I'd be absolutely thrilled to see him run. Go Pat!

Peg Luksik is also considering a run. I was hoping Pat would want to be Governor. I'll take either one in either position.

Lets get Lynn Swann back out there as well.

Time for nervous Specter staff to start looking for "real" jobs.

  21. Posted March 2, 2009 at 8:15 pm | Permalink

Peg and Pat both can't run for Senate. They would split the vote too much, leaving Arlen to emerge as the winner. Some of Arlen's henchmen (an assumption on my part) were wooing Diane Irey to help split the vote as well. I would love to support just one for Governor and one for Senator. I thought Pat would be best for Governor but if he chooses the Senate, I hope Peg goes for Governor, though Corbett will probably be tougher to beat in the primary than Arlen.

I voted for Spector in the last primary thinking that his seat was too valuable to give up to a Dem. After seeing him vote for the porkulus, what's the difference between Spector and a Dem? Nothing. Vote Toomey!

    Lynn WHO???

He was selected by corrupt GOP insiders to run because he was a Steeler and he is Black to be their puppet. He has no credentials for being governor and very little in terms of being conservative.

  24. Posted March 2, 2009 at 9:22 pm | Permalink

    My preference (fwiw):

    Senate — Toomey
    Governor — Luksik

  25. Posted March 2, 2009 at 9:25 pm | Permalink

    Why?

Casey wom by pretending to be a pro life, pro gun Democrat. PA is a democrat state with conservative values and those values must be articulated, defended, and promoted, not run away from.

Lynn Swan has no business running for any public office. What qualifications would he bring to the office? Being on of the most graceful wide receivers in history does not qualify him to be governor or dog catcher.

  27. Posted March 2, 2009 at 9:52 pm | Permalink

    Fearless, I couldn't agree more.

Dolley, being a great wide receiver doesn't disqualify you either. I guess if we get another lawyer in office, gee that would be perfect. /s

As for being selected by the corrupt, name some names.

"he could have negotiated with…" If the dems ask to spend a trillion, and would be happy spending 650 billion and the GOP in washington are ok spending 400 billion with some tax cuts, then they negotiate and agree to spend 600 billion with a tax cut or 2. is that a good result. Look, I understand he is better than Specter, but he is not a messiah. some of you concern me with your Toomey worship. he supported santorum. no doubt he did that to buy a few friends for this run. The conservatism we need in wash. d.c. is no negotiation with the libs in charge right now. filibuster until January 2011. be cautious and hold Pat's feet to the fire on these things.

Arlen Specter is too liberal and his stimulus vote is the last straw. Arlen sure wishes they would go away and do something else, but guess what. Arlen Specter needs to go and his defeat is my first priority although I guess you must work for Arlen so it isn't yours.

Peg Luksik is a homeschool mother outsider etc etc. She ran against pro-abortion, tax and spend Tom Ridge as an independent twice.

Her first campaign was in the 1990 GOP primary for governor as an unknown. She got 46 percent against RINO, now Democrat Barbara Hafer, who was trounced by Casey Sr. in the general election.

A great lady who managed William Russell's campaign against Murtha, who had the tacit support of Rob Gleason.

Peg is Pennsylvania's version of Sarah Palin who deserves to be elected to something. The time for insider business as usual politicians needs to end.

She is my second choice to run against Specter next year for that and more. But maybe Pat Toomey will step up to the plate. He's sounding like it . I think Specter's union card check bill vote will determine Toomey's plans.

  34. Posted March 3, 2009 at 2:04 am | Permalink

    I disagree.

As a graceful wide receiver, he could leap over tall backyard fence in pursuit of stray dogs.

  36. Posted March 3, 2009 at 2:12 am | Permalink

Peg understands and respects the proper and limited role of government in our lives. That alone qualifies her for any office she would seek and that is also the reason why establish Republicans fought her so hard.

She also trusts 'we the people' with firearms. Again, a singular qualifier over anyone who believes that government imposed restrictions will make us safer.

Toomey has way too many enemies statewide to ever win, and he has alligned himself with the wrong people. Does he think the Shaner Family will help him carry central PA? These bunch of drunks are too busy doing insider trading and ripping off investors, they are a joke. Toomey has no chance.

While I certainly agree that Specter is not the most conservative candidate, we MUST re-elect him. No other Republican can win PA. The whole reason Specter is able to represent our state is because of his stronghold in Philadelphia. No other R is able to get this large number of votes. If Specter does not win the primary, the state will certainly elect a liberal candidate. We can not afford to lose more seats to the Dems in the Senate.

  43. Posted March 11, 2009 at 7:43 pm | Permalink

We must re-elect a "Republican" who voted for the stimulus bill? Are you crazy?

What is the difference between Specter and a Democrat? There's not a dimes worth of difference.

  44. Posted March 11, 2009 at 7:47 pm | Permalink

Dave – I love your sarcasm. I mean, you'd have to be flippin' crazy to be serious, so you are obviously joking with all of us.

After all, we know that Specter isn't the least bit Republican in anything he does. Abortion? Liberal. Fiscal issues? Liberal. Using US law as the basis for decisions? Liberal.

Great joke, Dave. Thanks for the laugh!
